More babies

No, not me, you silly people! Rebecca and Daniel announced last night that they're expecting #2 in January! Congratulations! We are split between those of us wanting a boy and those wanting a girl. Only 2 more months til we can possibly find out the answer to that surprise! In any case, we are all really excited!

Memorial Day

I've been meaning to post about Memorial Day events from this past Monday all week. Somehow time just slips by.

We had a nice morning here, picking up the place a bit and enjoying a leisurely breakfast. Romona and I managed to sneak away for an hour and make it down to Harrisburg's art fest. We then went over to Grandma's house to go to the traditional Linglestown parade. Not very impressive at all. We think that all the men in the American Legion over there are just dying off, and whoever was left to organize it was not organized.

After this somewhat torturous experience, we went back home to meet up with family that was coming over for a bbq. Just the basic fam showed up- the siblings, Uncle Tom and his crew, Grandma and Uncle Mike.

It was a very windy, beautiful day outside and we had all the windows and and doors open from people going in and out. Suddenly we heard the door to the garage slam shut and a scream from Nathaniel. Sure enough, his fingers had gotten caught!

I ran him to the bathroom and put his hand under cold water and told him not to look at it. After a minute, I looked at it, and it was swollen and had a gouge on his left ring finger from his first knuckle to his second knuckle. It was already purple and his finger was peeled too. The skin was just all pushed back. It was gross. I put some pressure on it for a minute and then rinsed it again. It seemed to slow down on bleeding, and although it was gross, it didn't seem like the cut was as severe as it could have been. So, we ultimately decided not to take him for stitches. Instead, we wrapped it in gauze and gave him some Tylenol and a popsicle while we rested his hand on a bag of frozen peas to help with the swelling. He was still a little teary-eyed, but then found the virtue in surviving a tragedy, and was proud of the wound he incurred and the sympathy he could extract from others.

His little finger is now looking a whole lot better, and we've reduced the wrappings to just a bandaid. Whenever asked about it, he seems to not be able to use it, but the rest of the day he uses it nonstop.

Memories

So, yesterday I was rumaging thru our suitcases, looking for Nathaniel's swimsuit. What I found instead was the kids' bags from Kindergarten in Germany. I had never gone through them since we arrived here, and it set me down memory lane. It seems a lifetime away already, and yet it seems like home still... The kids were SO excited to see the books their teachers made for them. I didn't even realize that they existed. What thoughtful teachers they had!

Ariel was especially excited (even breaking into German songs) over the pictures of her friends at school (including Sebastian!), while Nathaniel was hugging his music book they sent home and was proudly carrying around the card Elias's family made for us.

In the suitcase we also found the picture of Aidan and Ariel together that Aidan had made for her. It now sits on her nightstand so she can see him everyday.

Friends

Even from across the ocean, Ariel has not forgotten her dear friend Aidan. She mentions him daily, and usually writes him a note or draws a picture of him and herself together. Here is the one from today:

What's in yours?

Rescue Pack, that is. Well, upon asking, Nathaniel displayed his contents alright. It started with a book. A good book. "A superbook", he says (the little cardboard book titled 'All Things Bright and Beautiful'). Then he whipped out 2 stuck toys (2 mini-keychain beanies hooked together), and then chapstick. Superchapstick. Followed by, "don't take this mom, it's my special wip stick" .

Yes, I'm notorious for confiscating items that spill, leak, leave colored spots or oily marks on clothing or walls.

He was just so cute describing to us what everything was and what it was for in his little boyish voice, trying to sound manly. He can do this grownup voice that's so funny. He does it when he's telling you something that you need to know or when he's hanging out with the guys. So cute.

And for those of you who don't know about the rescue pack, he has a backpack that is a stuffed penguin that he keeps his things in. The rescue pack idea is from the Go, Diego Go cartoon on Nickjr. It has provided him with hours of entertainment.

Operation

Dustan's big day was Thursday. We arrived at the hospital a few minutes early, and got the paperwork done rather quickly. By 11:00 they took him back to be prepped for surgery. Then came the long wait. His suregery was scheduled for noon, but we were waiting on the doctor and the op nurse to show up. Wherever they were.... it was 1:15pm when they finally took him to get his knee done. So, all in all, I suppose an hour isn't terribly long to wait, but it is when anticipating being miserable!

I waited around until the doc came out at 2:30 to say it all went well and Dustan was put in a cast. And then I waited some more until he was out of his ansthesia and for the discharge papers. We were home by 5 and got settled in. The kids thought the cast was cool. Daddy definately does not hold the same opinion.

Another Birthday

Yet again... 'twas my father's birthday a couple days ago. They're actually having a party for him today. I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun! Happy Birthday Dad, and I hope I didnt ruin the surprise!!!
